French Toast

I made a Challah Bread the other day and I made sure I had some left for French Toast.  The Challah bread  is perfect for french toast because it soaks up the egg custard, and it holds together pretty good.

I am not a fan of soggy french toast, something about the texture is just not appealing to me.  A good french toast is nice and soft in the inside from the custard, but still holding it's shape.

I cooked the french toast in a frying pan on low-medium heat.  I didn't want the bread to cook on the outside and not in the inside.

This recipe is pretty simple.  I used Challah bread, but you can use any bread you like.  A day or two old bread is better because it will soak up the custard pretty good, better than fresh bread.

Ingredients

4 slices of bread-Challah or Brioche
1 cup of milk
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp of sugar
1/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp of butter
confectioners sugar-optional
warm maple syrup-optional

Beat the eggs, then add the milk, vanilla, sugar and salt.  One by one, soak the bread on each side for about a minute depending on how thick the pieces are.

Melt one tbsp of butter in a large frying pan.   Cook the bread for about  3 minutes on each side until nice and  brown.  Sprinkle some confectioners sugar and enjoy with warm maple syrup.
