Pastelillos de Guayaba y Queso (Guava and Cheese Pastries)

On every trip I have taken to Puerto Rico, the first thing I run to the bakery to eat are the Pastelillos de Guayaba.  Pastelillos de Guayaba are made with puff pastry dough, guava paste and cream cheese. You can omit the cream cheese if you like, but for me they taste even better with it.  Puff Pastry is really easy to do, but it is time consuming.  So, why not get a little help from the supermarket.  Get the puff pastry from the freezer isle in your supermarket.

These Guava pastries are just divine.  The guava is creamy, sweet, and the puff pastry is nice and flaky.  I just love this.  These are super easy to make and with the help of buying the puff pastry, these can hit your table in no time.

Ingredients:

Guava Paste
1 packaged of Puff Pastry Dough (2 sheets)
1 8 oz cream cheese
2 tbsp of sugar
1 egg white
1 tsp water

Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Set oven to 375 degree

In a mixing bowl combine the cream cheese and sugar, beat until creamy. Set aside.  Unroll the puff pastry and place on a floured counter.  With a rolling pin, stretch the puff pastry slightly to make it a little bigger.  Once done place on prepare baking sheet. Cut the guava paste into 1/4 inch slices and place on pastry sheet. Leaving a space in between.

Follow with a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture.  I use a piping bag to make it easier.  Repeat process until you have about 15 pastries.

Unroll the second pastry sheet and stretch it just a little longer with the rolling pin, place on top to cover the guava and cheese.  Cut  dough with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter. Beat the egg white and water.  Brush on each pastry.

Bake for about 20-25 minutes.  Let them cool down for at least 10 minutes before eating.  Sprinkle with powder sugar.  Enjoy!!

    1. Well, now you can make them. They are really easy to make, just get the puff pastry already made. You can make them with the cream cheese or just with the guava.
